The 5-Minute Guide to Softer Sheets

Washed cotton waffle bedding in morning light

Softness isn't only about thread count — it's about fiber, weave and how you care for them. Five minutes here will change how your bed feels tonight.

Pick the weave for the sleeper you are

Percale is crisp and cool — the fresh-hotel-bed feeling. Sateen is smooth and warmer, with a soft sheen. Jersey is the broken-in T-shirt of bedding. Hot sleepers usually love percale; cold sleepers drift toward sateen.

Wash smarter, not harder

Cold or warm water, gentle cycle, and less detergent than you think you need. Overdosing detergent leaves residue that makes fibers stiff. Line-dry when you can; otherwise tumble low and pull them out slightly damp.

The two-set rule

Keep two sets per bed and alternate them weekly. Each set rests, fibers recover, and both last noticeably longer.
